Our History
- 👪 Rooted in Family: CCEIL was founded by a group of Cameroonian families who immigrated to Canada and have been living in Lethbridge for over 10 years.
- 💬 Community Beginnings: Our early connections started in a WhatsApp group, where we shared information, offered support, and welcomed newcomers.
- 🏡 Support for Newcomers: When a new immigrant arrived, a community member would volunteer to host them, providing transportation, meals, and help settling in—often for several months.
- 🤝 Facing Challenges Together: As new Black immigrants, our community has experienced common struggles such as: ● Systemic racism and job market discrimination ● Cultural adjustment and language barriers ● Housing, transportation, and financial literacy issues ● Weather adaptation and mental health challenges
- 🛠️ Responding to Needs: To address these issues, CCEIL developed plans for: ● Mentorship programs ● Cultural sensitivity training for employers ● Networks to help with housing and employment ● Awareness campaigns to combat stereotypes ● Advocacy for inclusive policies and better access to education
- 🎉 Building Stronger Bonds: Even before officially forming CCEIL, members organized regular social events such as: ● Cooking lessons for children ● Support for families with newborns ● Assistance during bereavement ● Recreational and cultural gatherings
- 🌱 From Grassroots to Growth: What started as mutual support among friends has grown into a formal organization dedicated to empowering immigrants and fostering a connected, inclusive community.
